Lovely Metaphor

I was told a story today and instantly wanted to share it with my husband, and then my brother, and then a few friends. So I’ll share it here.

Last week at the Viginia Network state conference, the keynote related a scene from a trip to India. While there, she had seen an elephant tethered to a stake in the ground. She instantly began to wonder just how big the stake had to be to keep an elephant in place. As she saw the elephant’s owner approach, she noticed him easily pull the stake from the ground – it was surprisingly small, maybe just a few inches long. She asked the man how he could tie the elephant to a stake so very small? What if the animal just decided to walk off? Wasn’t it dangerous?

The man responded, “It’s not the size of the stake, but the IDEA of the stake.”

The keynote speaker then invited everyone to think about the small things in our lives that keep us tethered in one place. Similar to a dog commanded to “stay!”, we can keep ourselves from moving and progressing with “stakes” that may only be small, unimportant sticks in the sand – easy to pull up.

Good stuff, huh?
